Olympic gold medalist, Tom Daley, came into the meme-able light during the 2021 Olympics as he was continuously spotted in the crowds knitting away. When this happened, we opened the discussion of mindful activities - something we can do to feel 'in the zone' and escape from reality for some time - this can be knitting for some of us. Recently, Tom Daley spoke to Yahoo! about his mindful meditation practise.
"I always start with 10 minutes of mindfulness everyday, I try to start with it anyway, if my son doesn't wake up while I'm halfway through."
Daley speaks to us in this, we understand that there will always be parts of life that can disrupt a meditation practise - but this is totally fine and normal! It is practically impossible to completely clear one's mind, so let these disruptions flow through. At Meditation Rocks we offer meditations to the 'juggler's of life' - Tom Daley being one of them! Daley goes on to discuss how meditation has been a part of his life for years now,
"Sometimes if I'm on a train and I have an extended period of time, or if I'm in a car or whatever, I find a place to be able to just do it, it always makes me feel better."
We mentioned in our meditations that these are perfect to take on the go, especially on a train, a bus or as a passenger in a car - use that period of time to go to your happy place, practise a body scan or do a mudra dance! Daley continues to share how he juggles his busy life with a young child and as an Olympic athlete, including offering himself some extra time just for himself,
"When I was training, I didn't have much time during the day so I used to wake up an hour earlier to have an hour to myself. I would have my coffee, watch the news and catch up on things that I wanted to do so that when Robbie woke up, I was excited for him to wake up. It never felt like we woke up at the same time and were both trying to catch up on what we needed to do. Not that he had much to do! But, for me, I felt like, 'Oh my gosh, I need to do my emails or I want to watch the news, but I don't want Robbie to watch the news', all of these things. So being able to make a little bit of time for myself has been really important."
We reiterate this frequently at Meditation Rocks, making time for yourself is important - even 10 minutes of mindfulness before the rest of the house wakes up. Or, delve yourself into a personal hobby - as we discussed above, Tom Daley has been snapped multiple times knitting away in any kind of space - on this he says,
"For me, knitting was my mindfulness and meditation. I think it's because you have to be so 'in the moment' and so focused on what you're doing that all of the other distractions outside, you can't be thinking about. It's a great way to be able to centre everything and be very, you know, in that particular moment. I think that's what people often get freaked out about sometimes: 'What's next? How am I going to do that? Oh my gosh, I've run out of time.' People's minds are going a million miles an hour. Sometimes just taking the time to sit down, relax and just have 10 minutes to yourself can change that."
We couldn't agree more Tom!
