This year, singer Tom O'Dell released a new album titled 'monsters' which gives us a grittier, bleaker sound than his previous songs from Long Way Down. The electronic sounds can give some kind of unsettling listen - a physical representation of how being trapped in anxiety can feel.
Listening carefully to his lyrics, specifically in 'monster v1' and 'monster v2' he includes the reminder to breathe and count to three - a familiar action for those in meditation or those with any form of anxiety. Odell was actually rushed to hospital in 2018 with a panic attack thought to be a stroke - it was that bad.
Odell said of the song, “In 2019, my anxiety got so bad that I had to stop making music for a while. There was a period when it felt like I couldn’t leave the house without having a panic attack. I wrote this song, monster, about trying to overcome my struggles with those mental health problems."
He goes on to explain that 'monster v1' is the "song in its purest form...the lyrics mean so much to me."
Odell has also taken up transcendental meditation. This technique of meditation is silent, or mantra-based. It is used to promote a state of relaxed awareness and stress relief but also gives access to higher states of consciousness - to transcend. It can help individuals to decompress and remove yourself from a situation.
Other familiar faces who also practice transcendental meditation include, Zac Efron, Ellen DeGeneres and Hugh Jackman.
We are seeing meditation weave into everyday lives, people understand and appreciate the escape, relief and relaxation any and all meditation practices offer.
You can listen to monsters by Tom Odell on all music streaming platforms.
